Understanding tennis elbow

What is tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow is pain on the outside of the elbow. It is caused by overusing the forearm muscles and the tendons that attach them to the bone near the elbow. Doctors call it lateral epicondylitis.

Despite the name, most people get it from everyday repetitive gripping and twisting, such as DIY, gardening, decorating or long hours at a keyboard. Golfer's elbow is the same kind of problem on the inside of the elbow.

It usually gets better with time and by easing off the activity that caused it, although it can take many months. A support or strap is designed to take some of the load off the sore tendon while you carry on using your arm.

Common signs

How tennis elbow can feel

Tennis elbow tends to come on gradually. These are the signs people notice most often.

Pain on the outside of the elbow

Pain and tenderness on the bony point on the outside of the elbow, sometimes spreading down the forearm.

Pain when you grip or twist

Turning a door handle, opening a jar or lifting a kettle brings the pain on.

A weaker grip

Holding a pen, a racket or a full cup feels harder than it should.

Aching after use

The forearm aches after repetitive tasks and eases with rest.

How a Bauerfeind support helps

Four ways a support can help tennis elbow

Compression

Medical-grade knit fits closely around the elbow and forearm, giving a reassuring sense of support.

Targeted pressure

Contoured pads press gently on the forearm muscles, designed to take load off the point where the tendon attaches.

Adjustable fit

Straps let you set the pressure yourself, and loosen or tighten it as your day changes.

Support while you work

Slim enough to wear under a sleeve, so you can keep using your arm for work, hobbies and sport.

EpiTrain Elbow Support

Everyday tennis and golfer's elbow

EpiTrain: all-day support with massaging pads

A knitted elbow support with two contoured pads, one on each side of the elbow, that massage the forearm muscles as you move. Reduced pressure at the edges and a soft zone at the crook of the elbow make it comfortable to wear through the day.

EpiPoint Elbow Strap

Targeted relief

EpiPoint: a slim strap with a precise pressure pad

A compact strap worn on the forearm just below the elbow. Its cushioned pad applies pressure exactly where it is needed, and an adjustable band lets you set the level, with a red marker to show if it is too tight. The pad can be switched over, so one strap fits the left or right arm.

FAQ

Common questions about tennis elbow supports

Which support is best for tennis elbow?

If you want comfortable support you can wear all day, the EpiTrain is the usual starting point. If you prefer something smaller that applies pressure to one spot, the EpiPoint strap is designed for that. For racket sports and golf, the Sports Elbow Support and Sports Elbow Strap are lighter and made for training. If you are not sure, ask your GP or physiotherapist.

Should I choose a strap or a sleeve?

A strap is small and discreet and puts pressure on one area of the forearm. A sleeve, such as the EpiTrain, covers the whole elbow and adds compression and warmth as well as pads on both sides. Many people choose a sleeve for all-day wear and a strap for specific tasks or sport.

Do these supports work for golfer's elbow too?

Yes. Golfer's elbow affects the inside of the elbow rather than the outside. The EpiTrain has a pad on each side of the elbow, and the pad on our straps can be positioned on either the inside or the outside of the forearm.

Where should a tennis elbow strap sit?

On the forearm, just below the elbow, with the pad over the muscle rather than on the bone. It should feel snug but not tight. Follow the fitting instructions in the box.

How long does tennis elbow take to get better?

It varies. Tennis elbow often gets better on its own, but it can last from six months to two years, and most people recover within a year. See your GP if the pain is not improving after a few weeks of resting the arm.

Do I need a prescription?

No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first, so the support suits you and your diagnosis.

How do I choose my size?

Each product page has a size guide showing where to measure. The EpiPoint and Sports Elbow Strap are one size. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.

Not sure what is causing your elbow pain, or which support is right for you? Speak to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant, who can advise on the best option.
