Understanding heel and arch pain
What causes heel and arch pain?
The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot from the heel to the toes, and it can become irritated where it joins the heel bone.
The pain is usually felt under the heel and is often at its worst with the first steps in the morning or after sitting. A heel spur, a small bony growth on the heel bone, can cause similar pain.
Aching arches are often linked to long hours on your feet or to arches that have started to flatten. An insole is designed to cushion the heel, support the arch and spread pressure more evenly with every step.
Common signs
How heel and arch pain can feel
Heel and arch pain usually builds up gradually. These are the signs people notice most often.
Sharp pain under the heel
A stabbing pain under the heel with your first steps in the morning.
Pain after rest
It eases as you get moving, then returns after sitting or a long spell on your feet.
Aching arches
Tired, sore arches by the end of the day, especially on hard floors.
A tender heel
The underside of the heel is sore when you press on it.
How a Bauerfeind insole helps
Four ways an insole can help
Cushioning
A soft viscoelastic cushion under the heel absorbs impact as your foot lands.
Pressure relief
The insole is shaped to spread pressure away from the sore point on the heel.
Arch support
A supportive shell holds up the arch, designed to reduce the strain on the plantar fascia with each step.
A steady heel
A contoured heel cup steadies the heel and rearfoot so the foot is better guided as you walk.
Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs
ErgoPad Redux Heel: a soft landing for sore heels
A full-length insole with a soft viscoelastic cushion directly under the heel, designed to absorb impact and spread pressure away from the painful point. A supportive shell steadies the heel and eases strain on the plantar fascia. Available in narrow and wide fittings.
For tighter-fitting shoes
ErgoPad Redux Heel 2: slim relief for heel pain
A thin, lightweight insole with a recess under the heel that reduces impact on the heel bone, surrounded by shock-absorbing foam. It also supports the arch, and its low height makes it suitable for closer-fitting shoes.
Tired, aching arches
GloboTec Comfort: everyday cushioning and arch support
An everyday insole for tired, aching feet. Built-in arch support and a deep, cushioned heel cup steady the foot and spread pressure more evenly, with a soft top layer for all-day comfort. Choose a short (3/4) or full-length version.
FAQ
Common questions about insoles for heel pain
Which insole is best for plantar fasciitis?
The ErgoPad Redux Heel insoles are designed specifically for plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Choose the full-length ErgoPad Redux Heel for everyday and sports shoes, or the slimmer ErgoPad Redux Heel 2 for closer-fitting shoes. If your main problem is tired, aching arches rather than heel pain, the GloboTec Comfort is the usual starting point.
Do insoles help with heel pain?
Insoles or heel pads are among the self-care measures commonly suggested for plantar fasciitis, alongside rest, supportive shoes and stretching exercises. They are designed to cushion the heel and reduce strain on the sole of the foot, but they are not a cure.
Will the insoles fit my shoes?
Our insoles are designed to fit most everyday shoes, and they usually replace the insole that came with the shoe. For closer-fitting shoes, choose a slimmer or 3/4 length option.
Do I wear an insole in both shoes?
Yes. Insoles are sold in pairs and should be worn in both shoes, even if only one foot hurts, so both feet are supported in the same way.
When should I see a doctor about heel pain?
See your GP if the pain is severe or stopping you doing normal activities, is getting worse or keeps coming back, has not improved after two weeks of self-care, or if you have diabetes or any tingling or loss of feeling in your foot.
Do I need a prescription?
No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first, so the support suits you and your diagnosis.
How do I choose my size?
Choose your usual shoe size. Each product page lists the sizes and fittings available. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.
